rsd 2021, drop 1

I arrived at Amoeba at 7:30, this morning, for the 9am opening. The line was much longer than I expected. The McDonald's that used to be next to Amoeba has been torn down, the lot repurposed into a fenced-in, outdoor homeless shelter. A woman was screaming at her fellow campers / refugees somewhere within the compound of tents and tarp-covered shanties.

Amoeba switched to a menu system for this year's Record Store Day. At past RSD events, customers flooded the store, when the doors opened, and grabbed whatever they wanted. I kind of miss that sort of orderly chaos. This year, each customer checked the items they wanted on a menu. The requested items were pulled by staff, in the order in which the completed menus were received, and left for the customer at the cash register.

For some reason the top item (Brian Jonestown Massacre / Telescopes split 10") on my list was not on the menu. But I got most of the other stuff I wanted:

--The Gun Club "Ruby Sessions" (7")
--Bardo Pond "Volume 1" (orange vinyl)
--Bardo Pond "Volume 2" (translucent smoke vinyl)
--Jim Messina & His Jesters "The Dragsters" (blue vinyl)
--Oh Sees "Chapel SF 10/2/19"
--V/A "Hillbillies in Hell: Volume XII"
--Wipers "Youth of America -- Anniversary Edition"

Actually, those Bardo Pond albums weren't on the list I downloaded, so it was a pleasant surprise to discover them on the menu. That translucent smoke of Volume 2 looks beautiful.

This was Drop 1. Drop 2 is next month. So, I look forward to doing it all over again in a few weeks. It was a very pleasant morning. It's nice to have RSD back after last year's fustercluck.
