I was in the mailroom. The woman I like called me about a laser printer problem. I explained that I had examined the printer and, finding that it was a technical matter beyond my knowledge and capability, referred the matter to the IT department. "That sort of thing is above my pay scale," I said.
"I don't think there's much around here that is within your pay scale," she said.
"You're probably right about that." I just laughed it off. But for the rest of the day, I felt hurt and miserable--partly because I knew what she said was true and partly because it was coming from someone I've adored all these months.
