a bright emptiness


I left a breath in the far fields, a dead bird in the grey nest of November. I dug for coins in the orchard. The real treasure was the feel of cold soil on my fingers. I became a curmudgeon at a very early age, drinking wine behind the church, the pastor scowling from his window of books that were more interesting than he could ever be.
