Death leaves a trail of breadcrumbs

San Francisco is one big, violently gushing orifice.

I am often quietly horrified by the stains and digestive residue I encounter while walking the streets of this city. What bio-chemical reactions could produce such things? I always expect to find a body nearby, parked on the curb or in the gutter. Surely the entity responsible for these leavings couldn't make it very far after making such a deposit. But I never see the body--not even a chalk outline--just the chunks and fluids left behind.
